Form and Function

Am I the only one who thinks it strange that airports have become the place where the majority of Americans encounter architecture with any real thought or design? I was in three airports this holiday season, Jacksonville, Chicago and Minneapolis, and all were stunning structure complete with art installations, exhibitions, soaring ceilings, expansive views and attention to detail. Granted, two of those cities (Chicago and Minneapolis) are known for art and architecture, but it still seems just a little strange that our dominant public space is a transportation hub. Let me say that I'm basing this on no research whatsoever, just my own observations, but I don't see as much design in other public spaces (not even malls) as I do in airports. Posted by Picasa

Nice. The airport is a city's chace to make a first impression on a lot of it's visitors.
Fly into the terminal building you have posted there, and then fly into Beamount, Tx; or into Kansas City where the terminals are just old brick buildings.
It leaves a different kind of taste in your mouth so to speak.
I don't know if that's that actual reasoning. -just a thought to add to your thought.

Take it easy.
