Spring Break

We're off to Flordia today for Spring Break. Recently, Florida announced that it had a surplus in the state budget. Jeb wants to do three things with this surplus. First, he wants to reduce the tax on hotel beds. Second, he wants to give every homeowner $100. And finally, he wants to reduce the tax on alcoholic beverages purchased by the glass. Is he really fooling anybody with this crap? How much more blatant do you have be before poor people realize they're getting pissed on? Posted by Picasa

yes, he is fooling people, those with their heads in the sand. and anyway, it doesn't really matter if poor people get upset, they don't vote. unfortunately, that's all that matters.

This is an interesting issue-those were good points. Although I disagree with the $100 property tax rebate regardless of who suggested it (because I don't feel that $100 is going to really make or break anybody), I must point out that this is a tax cut that was suggested by House Democrats, and only after they suggested it did Democrats support this plan. But, I also don't agree with this property tax cut of $100 because everyone's property is worth something different (Bush has cut it up into 2 values of houses but that is pretty rough). I guess it's not a complete slap in the face for the poor since the state's 60,000 trailer owners are also getting the same $100 that a person owning a home valued at $140,000. Although I don't completely agree with this part of the tax cuts, it's nice to see that this budget surplus doesn't automatically mandate an increase in government spending.

That's a good point about surplus not automatically leading to govt. spending, Rob. But I think there are real needs in your state for, say, bilingual education which, if not addressed in a REAL serious way is going to be a drain on your state's budget for years to come since we know that higher educational outcomes are linked with a whole host of money saving life conditions such as decreased criminal behavior.

I think what you're forgetting Josh is that Jesus said we will always have the poor with us. If Florida spent its surplus on programs to reduce poverty, and the programs worked, then Jesus would have to return to earth like right away.

Maybe Jesus just isn't ready to come back yet.
