In the Army Now

Okay, I don't usually do this (post edited photos), but I couldn't resist. This is a photoshoped picture (obviously) of my cousin. He used it to run for hall president of his dorm with the caption "Rob Whiting: Making Your Hall Safe for Democracy." It's pretty funny I think. But it got me to thinking about the way the real military markets itself. Let me start by saying that while I am very much opposed to the war in Iraq, I am extremely proud, honored, and humbled by the soldiers there or anywhere. I just think we need to get one thing straight. Despite what the commercials would have you believe, the MILITARY IS NOT AN EXTREME SPORT. While you might get to jump from helicopters or rappel from mountains, it doesn't end there like in the commercials. You don't just make it to the top, wipe your brow and salute the camera. No, in fact, you have to be willing to jump out of the helicopter and then shoot someone in the face. That's what joining the military is about when it comes right down to it, shooting people in the face. We should stop lying to potential recruits (and ourselves). Being willing to kill another human being should never be confused with an adrenaline rush.

I enjoy all of your pictures, but this one, for some reason, just really appealed to me.
