Heroes

Bike

A lot is being written and said about Texas' favorite native athlete, Lance Armstrong. The word tossed around most is hero. It's almost a part of his name-the heroic Lance Armstrong. But let me be the first, and perhaps only, person to say that I don't get it. He beat cancer. I'm very happy about that. Beating cancer, especially as severe as he had it, takes a lot of hard work, dedication and money, and his fight was very admirable. But heroic? Come on, he was fighting for his own life. Who among us wouldn't fight for his or her own life? I think most of us would do whatever it took to survive. After his recovery, rehab and subsequent cycling success, what did he do to reward his family that had stuck by him through everything? He left them for a rock star. Why doesn't that story get told when people talk about Lance? Giving up your life so someone else can fight for their own is heroic. Why aren't we talking about the people Lance left behind?

Amen, sister! I mean, brother.
I keep wondering if I imagined that he left his family, since that part is never brought up. That's the part I remember.
Thank you.
You are my hero.
Thanks, Jess. Megan and I talked about this the other day and she pointed out that his wife could have been cheating on him. I agree, but the point is about how the media just doesn't even talk about this part of his life. I say that if the genders were reversed, it would be talked about exclusively.
Josh - I share the same sentiments about Lance. Did you know that he was actually named after my uncle? Anyway, it is practically taboo to say anything negative about Lance. I am glad you did. He gives me the willies.
